Harpersfield Covered Bridge

カバードブリッジと云えば"マディソン郡の橋"を思い起こされる方が多いのでしょうが、実際には、その舞台であるアイオワ州よりもオハイオ州の方に多く見られるそうです。
日本では愛媛辺りに幾つか見られます。有名なのは宇佐神宮(大分県宇佐市)の呉橋ですね。

ここはGenevaからほど近いHarpersfieldに架かるCovered Bridge.　自動車が通行できるようにと、橋脚がRCや鉄骨で補強されております。
北端部は1913年に流されてしまったため、S造に造り替えられました。

路盤は木造。当然、覆いも木造。剥き出しのトラスにRafterやBeamの接合具合が、なんともアメリカンな雰囲気です。

歩道部は、後に片持ち梁で増築されております。

"Replacing an earlier bridge that was carried away in a spring flood, the Harpersfield Covered Bridge was built in 1868 and spans the Grand River, a state-designated wild, and scenic river. This bridge, which currently carries County Road No.154(Harpersfield Road), is a two-span wooden Howe truss bridge, with center pier. The great flood of 1913 washed away the northern approach and it was at this time that the sdditional 140 foot steel truss was added. Extensive rehabilitation in 1992 included strengthening the lower chords,lowering and replacing the floor, and sdding a cantilevered walkway. The 228-foot-long Harpersfield Bridge is the longest covered bridge in Ohio and is on the National Register of Historic Places."
